Since I started food blogging six months ago, I have been obsessed with photos of the blood orange upside-down cake on Instagram and Pinterest! I saw some blood oranges at the store today and decided to make this cake! This orange cake looks visually appealing and tastes great!
About This Recipe
This orange cake is quick, simple, and made with simple everyday ingredients. Made with a layer of candied orange slices on top and bursting with orange flavor, this cake is perfect for citrus lovers.
What You Need to Make Blood Orange Upside-Down Cake
- Flour: Plain all-purpose flour works best for this cake. If you use self-raising flour, just omit 1 teaspoon of baking powder in the recipe.
- Blood oranges: You can find blood oranges for sale in most countries of the world from October to March.
- Orange juice: Orange juice adds citrus sharpness and flavor to the cake.
- Butter: Butter gives the cake a fluffy and moist texture.
- Baking powder: Baking powder is a leavening agent that increases the volume and lightens the texture of cakes.
- Salt: Add a pinch of salt to balance the sweetness.
- Granulated sugar: Granulated sugar adds sweetness to the orange cake.
- Eggs: Eggs add fat and structure to the baked goods and help them rise.
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (180ºC).
- Put 1 cup sugar and ½ cup water in a small saucepan. Stir to dissolve the sugar and bring to a boil. It is done when it turns a light golden caramel color.
- Pour the caramel into a round cake pan. Place the blood orange slices over top, covering the bottom of the pan completely.
- Add half a cup of softened butter to a bowl then add granulated sugar and give it a quick whisk. Then add eggs to the bowl and whisk again until the mixture look smooth.
- Add half a cup of orange juice. Sift in all-purpose flour, salt, and baking powder and whisk until mixture is smooth with no flour lumps remaining.
- Pour the mixture over the orange slices. Transfer the pan to the oven and bake for about 30 minutes until the cake is golden and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Remove the cake from the oven, and let it cool for 15 minutes. Use a sharp knife to trim around the edges, then flip the cake upside-down onto a large serving platter or cutting board.
How to Store the Leftover Cake?
It will stay good for 3-4 days in an airtight container.
Can I Use a Regular Cake Pan Instead of Springform?
Yes! Just be sure to line the bottom of the pan with parchment paper and let it cool before removing it from the pan.
