Chocolate Pancakes Ingredients

  • Flour: Plain all-purpose flour works best for this recipe.
  • Butter or oil: Butter gives a fluffy and moist texture to the pancakes.
  • Baking powder: Baking powder is a leavening agent that increases the volume and lightens the texture of the pancakes.
  • Salt: Add a pinch of salt to balance the sweetness.
  • Sweetener: You can use maple syrup, granulated sugar, or calorie-free sweetener to sweeten pancake batter.
  • Cocoa powder: Use high-quality unsweetened Dutch processed cocoa powder for the best flavor.
  • Egg: Eggs add moisture, tenderness, and richness to the pancake batter.
  • Vanilla extract: Vanilla adds sweetness and flavor.
  • Chocolate sauce: Undoubtedly, the best topping for pancakes is chocolate sauce or melted chocolate with berries and fresh fruits.

How to Make Chocolate Pancakes With Cocoa Powder

  • In a large bowl whisk all dry ingredients together (flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, sugar, and salt).
  • In another bowl crack the egg. Whisk egg with a fork until consistency is even. Then add the milk, vanilla extract, and melted butter, and mix well.
  • Stir in wet ingredients into dry ingredients. Mix until just combined. Do not overmix; a few lumps in the batter are okay. Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat and spray with non-stick cooking spray or grease with butter.
  • Pour the batter into the pan using a 1/4 cup measuring cup or a ladle.
  • Cook pancakes on each side for 2-3 minutes or until you see bubbles on the surface and the edges look golden brown and dry. Flip the pancake to cook the other side. Continue with the rest of the batter, and then stack the pancakes on a plate.
  • Top with melted chocolate or chocolate sauce and fresh berries.

Expert Tips

  • Lightly grease the pan with a bit of oil or butter to make sure the pancake won’t stick. You do not need to put a lot of oil in the pan at all.
  • The thickness of the pancake batter should be such that it can be easily poured but not too runny.
  • Whisk dry ingredients and wet ingredients in two separate bowls and then mix together until just combined.
  • Let the pancake batter sit for 10 minutes. Leaving pancake batter to rest can lead to fluffier pancakes by giving the baking powder more time to react and create small air bubbles in the batter.

Topping Ideas

  • Butter: Place a pat of butter on top of pancakes for an extra rich and buttery flavor.
  • Maple syrup: Maple syrup is the classic topping for the pancakes.
  • Chocolate sauce: Drizzle chocolate pancakes with chocolate sauce for an extra indulgence.
  • Fresh Fruits: Serve pancakes with fresh berries for a burst of color and freshness.
  • Whipped cream: Add a dollop of whipped cream on top of your chocolate chip pancakes for a light dessert.
