Coffee Milk Tea (Hong Kong style Yuanyang tea) is a popular beverage offering a unique blend of coffee and Hong Kong-style milk tea. You can serve it both hot or iced to fit all preferences. It is often enjoyed as a morning or afternoon pick-me-up.
What Is Coffee Milk Tea?
Hong Kong-style Yuanyang tea is a drink made with a combination of coffee, milk, and tea. Have you ever considered drinking coffee and tea together? Hong Kong-style tea combines exactly these two flavors. It combines the robustness of coffee with the creaminess and sweetness of milk tea. Pair it with boba pearls to give it a chewy texture and added flavor.
Coffee Milk Tea Ingredients
- Espresso: If you have an espresso machine, you will not have hard work. However, if you don’t have it and you don’t want to miss drinking Hong Kong-style tea, you can also try other coffee alternatives. You can use the coffee you brew with a moka pot or French press!
- Milk: No matter what milk you use, both dairy milk and non-dairy milk are acceptable. It will change the flavor a bit, but it is still delicious.
- Sweetener: Brown or white sugar is often used to sweeten this drink, but you can also use honey and maple syrup. You can alter the sweetness level by reducing or increasing the amount of sugar or syrup and have a drink customized to your liking.
- Tea: The tea I use is black tea and I think it has the best harmony with the taste of coffee and milk. Using a tea bag makes your work easier and you do not need to strain the milk and tea mixture at the end.
- Tapioca balls(boba pearls) or coffee jelly for topping.
How to Make Hong Kong-style Yuanyang?
First, heat the milk and teabag in a small saucepan. When the milk has steamed, add the sugar and stir until the sugar dissolves. Prepare espresso with an espresso machine or Moka pot. Remove the milk and tea mixture from the heat and discard the teabag. Pour the espresso into a glass and add milk and tea. If you want to have an iced Yuanyang, let the mixture of milk, tea, and espresso reach room temperature, and then put them in the refrigerator. Then add a few pieces of ice cubes to the glass cup.
Hot vs Iced?
You can enjoy your Yuanyang tea HOT or COLD! If you want it iced, let the mixture of milk, tea, and espresso reach room temperature, and then put them in the refrigerator. Then add a few pieces of ice cubes to the glass cup.
