What Is Golden Milk?

Turmeric golden milk (Haldi Ka Doodh), is a traditional Indian beverage with a light yellow color traditionally made by heating cow’s milk or a plant-based milk with turmeric and other spices such as cinnamon and ginger. You can make your own golden milk spice mix to keep in the pantry. All you have to do is mix 1 heaping teaspoon of the mix with a cup of hot milk.

Ingredients You Need to Make Turmeric Golden Milk

  • Turmeric: Golden milk, whose main ingredient is turmeric, got its name because of its vibrant yellow color. The bright yellow and fragrant turmeric is one of the main spices of the oriental kitchen that is used to change the color and taste of the food. I use ground turmeric to make golden milk, but you can also use fresh turmeric.
  • Ginger: Ginger adds warmth and fresh spiciness to the milk.  You can use both fresh ginger and powdered ginger. If you are using fresh ginger, you should put one or two small pieces of ginger into the milk mixture and remove the ginger pieces when the milk is heated.
  • Cinnamon: Cinnamon adds warmth, flavor and natural sweetness to the golden milk.
  • Milk: Turmeric golden milk can be made with both dairy and non-dairy milk such as hazelnut milk, cashew milk, soy milk or almond milk.
  • Sweetener: You can use sugar, maple syrup or honey to sweeten golden milk.
  • Black pepper: To make it more spicy add a dash of black pepper! Of course, this is completely optional.
