What You Need to Make Nutella French Toast

  • Bread: What bread makes the best Nutella French toast? I mostly use brioche, challah, or white bread to make French toast. Use thick enough bread slices for French toast. Too thin slices will fall apart easily and if bread slices are too thick they don’t cook through completely and you will end up with raw and custardy French toast.
  • Strawberries: Nutella French toast with strawberries is a super-easy way to enjoy red and juicy strawberries.
  • Eggs: The base of the French toast custard is milk, eggs, and sugar. Mix the eggs thoroughly with a whisk before adding the milk to prevent egg clumps in the custard.
  • Sugar: The amount of sugar we add is usually small because later the French toast is served with maple syrup, honey, cookie butter, Nutella, or something like that.
  • Milk: Milk adds moisture and fat to the French toast. To prevent soggy French toast, do not soak the bread slices in the custard for too long.
  • Nutella: The main flavor of this French toast is Nutella chocolate spread, which gives a sweet, chocolatey deliciousness to the bread slices.
  • Butter: You can use butter or oil to cook French toast.
  • Topping:  Melted Nutella, whipped cream, and fresh berries for topping.

How to Make Nutella French Toast With Strawberries

Cut bread into 1-inch slices but not thicker or thinner. Too thin slices will fall apart easily and if bread slices are too thick they don’t cook through completely and you will end up with raw and custardy French toast. Use at least a day-old bread. If the bread slices are fresh and soft you can bake them at 200F for about 10 minutes to dry out. Crack eggs in a wide shallow dish and whisk well until smooth.

Add milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, salt, and sugar. Melt some butter in a large non-stick pan over medium-high heat. Spread a layer of Nutella between two slices of bread and top with strawberry slices. Roll pieces of toast on the egg-milk mixture making sure all sides are covered. Place in pan and repeat with the other toasts until the pan is filled but the pieces are not touching each other. Turn them until both sides are golden. Transfer to a serving plate, top with strawberries, and drizzle with melted Nutella.

Expert Tips

  • Use a non-stick frying pan or electric griddle. Always make sure that the pan is hot before you put the bread slices in otherwise french toast will stick.
  • For the extra-rich French toast substitute half-and-half for the milk.
  • Coat the pan with vegetable oil and butter. This will help prevent the butter from burning. Carefully wipe the pan between each batch.
  • Sprinkle icing sugar over the top, drizzle maple syrup or melted Nutella, and serve with some fresh strawberries.

FAQs

Why Is My French Toast Soggy?

Don’t soak bread slices for too long. This causes the bread to absorb too much custard and you will likely end up with soggy French toast. If you want perfectly cooked French toast with a crispy outside, soak both sides of the bread slices quickly in custard. Use at least day-old, dry, and thick bread slices.  I mostly use brioche, challah, or white bread to make French toast. If the bread slices are fresh and soft you can bake them at 200F for about 10 minutes to dry out.

What Kind Of Bread Should I Use For French Toast?

I mostly use brioche, challah, or white bread to make French toast. Use thick enough bread slices for French toast. Too thin slices will fall apart easily and if bread slices are too thick they don’t cook through completely and you will end up with raw and custardy French toast.

How to Avoid the Eggy Taste in French Toast?

Whisk eggs thoroughly before adding milk to avoid clumps.  As an important rule use, 1 egg for every 1/4 cup of milk, and also don’t forget to add a splash of vanilla extract and a pinch of cinnamon to the French toast custard.
